Feast On Your Life

Feast On Your Life

Written by Ade

In a discussion with some friends the other day, the conversation moved on to the subject of poems that inspire us in our life journey and touch the core of our being. The poem I shared with my friends was one written by Derek Walcott entitled ‘love after love’.

In a world where befriending and enjoying ourselves is often considered selfish or self-indulgent, ‘love after love’ reminds us that we are The One we have been waiting for and to feast on our life.

The time will come

when, with elation,

you will greet yourself arriving

at your own door, in your own mirror,

and each will smile at the other's welcome,

and say, sit here.  Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was your self.

Give wine.  Give bread.  Give back your heart

to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored

for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,

peel your own image from the mirror.

Sit.  Feast on your life.

May you find the courage to always feast on your life.
